| Caxton South / EOA 2011 charity golf day |

Wednesday the 26th October 2011 has been set aside for the first Eye of Africa and Caxton South, Charity Golf Day, hosted at the prestigious Eye of Africa Golf & Leisure Club.
Both partners strongly believe in supporting the local community and have selected The Mossie Primary School in Forest Hill in Johannesburg South as the deserving beneficiary for this year’s event. Growing from 60 to 400 learners in a year, the school is in dire need of so many of the essential items, not just to help educate the children, but to also feed many of the orphans the school takes care of.
We invite you to participate and show your support by entering a 4-ball or sponsoring a hole. Cost of a 4-ball is R500 per player or R2000 per 4 ball team and this includes your green fees, golf cart, halfway house, prize-giving dinner and give-aways. We have almost sold out and have only a few spaces available. So book now!
Sponsorship of holes, are priced at R2000 and R3000 per hole. For your sponsorship, your business will receive a 5cm x 2column free advert in the Caxton papers (Alberton Record and Comaro Chronicle) for four weeks, plus your marketing material displayed on the hole sponsored.
Bookings are now open and can be made by contacting Marietjie Tame on 082 337 5713. |

Landscape guidelines |
Eye of Africa Golf & Residential Estate developed its Architectural and Landscape Guidelines to direct and inspire stand owners in designing their new residence. Its purpose is to safeguard the integrity of the most important asset – your home in this magnificent estate.
The Landscape Guidelines have been designed to assist you in continuing our formal native theme and to ensure the establishment of an indigenous and as far as possible an endemic Highveld plant community. It’s important to familiarise yourself with these guidelines when purchasing your property and planning your garden.

| Unearthing our rich heritage |

Not only does Eye of Africa Golf & Residential Estate, located near Eikenhof, boast some of the most prestigious property south of Johannesburg; it is also rich in history and diligent in preserving it for the next generation.
The original farm ALEWYNSPOORT was made up of a number of erven dating back to the part of the early development period of Johannesburg that followed the Anglo Boer war. A number of Afrikaner settlers lived on the property under British Colonial rule, and shared a commonage on which the British built a school house to serve the growing community.
The small school building that is still on the estate was in fact built in the late 1800’s. This original school house was constructed of hewn natural sandstone and had a corrugated iron roof. The school principal was resident on the property, and lived a short distance south of the school, in a house that was built halfway up the rocky outcrop of the poort.
The poort was well known for the wild aloes that grew there and from which the name Alewynspoort was derived.
As times grew tougher, the economy suffered, resulting in some of the farming community of Alewynspoort seeking employment in the gold mines that were being developed in the southern areas of the Witwatersrand. As a result many families moved away and the school eventually closed its doors in 1955.
Also on the estate is the small graveyard that served the community, and the family names of those buried here, are preserved with inscriptions on their gravestones. The names of Anema; Van der Walt; Smidt, and Van der Merwe represented a significant community of this period.

| Eye of Africa hosts Midvaal Mayoral golf day |
Eye of Africa Golf & Leisure Club recently hosted the annual Midvaal Mayoral Golf Day for the first time, “and we now intend to keep this as our permanent venue,” says Midvaal mayor, Cllr Timothy Nast.
Cllr Nast explains that the golfers are so impressed with the course and venue that it has been decided to keep the Eye of Africa Golf & Leisure Club as the permanent venue for this day. Some 80 golfers took to the field and funds raised this year will be donated to various organizations for the caring and upliftment of the elderly and pensioners.
“Though the recession has affected us all in some way or another, it has probably hit the elderly the hardest. And it is not as if they can now go out and find a job. It is our social responsibility to assist them and lend a helping hand,” says Cllr Nast. |

| An eye for safety - Golf carts safety |
The wind in your hair, the beautiful scenery and the tranquil sound of running water; these are some of the effects that are usually associated with driving on a golf cart around a magnificently designed golf estate. Golf carts may look harmless but they can cause their fair share of messy accidents, and they should be taken seriously.
Although you may have driven in them hundreds of times, it only takes a momentary lapse in concentration, to cause an accident. So, golf carts might not be as big, speedy and dangerous as full-size motor vehicles, but they should be handled with the same attentiveness and responsibility. So here are some golf cart safety tips to keep you safe on Eye of Africa's golf course:
- Only individuals with a valid RSA driving license may operate Eye of Africa golf carts;
- Keep your hands, feet and other body parts inside the cart at ALL times;
- Ensure you drive on the designated ‘golf cart’ trails/pathways around the estate and course;
- Be cautious of passing motor vehicles when crossing roads from various playing holes;
- Obey all signs and warnings around the estate and course;
- Remember, pedestrians, golfers and contractors have right of way;
- Be wary of other golf carts, golfers, contractors and walking pedestrians in walkways around estate and golf course;
- Ensure no loose objects fall from the cart when driving;
- Proceed slowly around corners and over slopes/hills;
- NO DRINKING AND DRIVING when operating a golf cart around the Eye of Africa Golf and Residential Estate.

| Did you know? |
In the 1940’s, a slate like stone that occurred naturally on what is the Eye of Africa Golf & Residential Estate today, was discovered and used as cladding for both internal and external finishes in the building of various homes. The demand for this material was so great that a company was registered with the name SLASTO, derived from the slate like nature of the material and its stone like colour. This company successfully operated a quarry on the property during the late 1940’s to the 1970’s.
Two small houses were built on the farm with Slasto to demonstrate its durability. The one in which the slate was used as a brick was known as the Rose Cottage and the second in which the slate was used as a face-cladding on the walls and on the roof, it became known as the “Pancake House”. The quarry manager lived in this house throughout the period that Slasto was sold commercially. Many features of the main manor house were finished in Slasto. |
